Cold path

Cold path

I have walked down this path several times before, to the area where I have taken all the shots of boxes. But today the path was a bit unusual.Or at least, after I placed the candles there it was.

What little light there is in the picture comes form two sources: the candles themselves, and from the flashligth I was using to illuminate the path and trees.

Pictures like this are always a bit hard, as the illumination is very much a hit-or-miss thing: you have to take a wild guess at how long you should illuminate the path, and see what the result is. For shots like this you need a digital camera, or you would get ruined by your film-and-processing costs before you get it right. Done well, though, the effects can be great.

Diagonal plant

Diagonal plant.

Diagonal plant.

Getting this picture was a pain. I needed the tripod to hold the camera still, because light levels were low. But even with the legs folded out as far as they will go, the tripod was too high for the angle I wanted. So I ended up reversing the pole section the camera mount is on, so I could hang the camera upside down between the legs of the tripod. It worked fine, until I got as far as trying to point the camera in the right direction: the occular (the part of the camera you look through) was about 20 cm off the ground, and while trying to get a good look through this I had to be able to reach the tightening screw on the tripod head… I think I did all right, all things told.

Houdini the Tree

A small tree growing in snow

A small tree growing in snow

If I am to give a personality to trees, this one has to be “The break-out King”: it’s been snowed on, covered in snow, but still grows. And it’s growing on an old box similar to the one I have photographed several times before.
